Benefits of spices

The spices you eat daily don't just add flavour to your food - they serve a healthier purpose. Most herbs and spices, experts say, help protect against chronic conditions like cancer, diabetes and even heart disease.

Herbs like basil and parsley and spices like cinnamon, chili peppers, turmeric, garlic, oregano, basil and thyme boost health levels. Researchers say that using seasonings in your food also plays a positive role in controlling your weight. When your food is tasty, you tend to eat faster and with more fulfillment because if you aren't satisfied, you're more likely to eat more. Store fresh herbs and spices in airtight containers that shield them from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Turmeric can be used to sprinkle on egg salads, mixed with yoghurt to have as a sandwich spread, added to chicken or seafood casseroles, and even to rice. Garlic can be used in pasta recipes, stir-fry dishes, pizza and meat dishes. Use oregano with scrambled eggs and salad dressings, sprinkle over pizzas or soup.
