One deals with hiccups several times in his/her lifespan, which is quite common. Hiccups often occur during emotional stress or after drinking carbonated drinks or alcohol.
Even prolonged laughter can cause hiccups. They can be partly psychological in the case of adults as well. Though no one knows for sure what causes hiccups in babies, certain research shows that some foods that a breastfeeding mom eats can increase the likelihood of hiccups in the baby. So, it is better to avoid the consumption of too much spicy food or caffeinated beverages. As a baby is introduced to solid foods, sensitivity or intolerance can cause hiccups as well. A sudden drop in temperature can cause an individual to get hiccups. In infants, the temperature drop is more noticeable. There are indeed a lot of ways to supress hiccups. Here are some of them:
- The best way to supress hiccups is to relax and control your breathing
- Drink at least two to three glasses of water without a pause
- Taking sugar or honey is a popular method
- Try to keep your mind off the thought of hiccupping
- There is the lemon method, where you cut a lemon in half and then suck the juice from each of them
- If hiccups last longer better consult your physician. The treatment for intractable hiccups can be somewhat complex. The first thing a doctor will do is check for any underlying conditions or illnesses. A doctor may perform blood tests, an ECG and x-rays of the chest. If a condition is found then that illness will be treated. Treating the illness will generally cure the hiccups.
